A federal appeals court on Thursday allowed President Donald Trump to keep control of National Guard troops in Los Angeles for now.

Earlier that day, a judge had ordered Trump to return control to California Governor Gavin Newsom, saying Trump broke the law. But the government quickly appealed, and the court paused the judge’s order.

California sued the Trump administration, saying the troops should only protect federal buildings, not patrol city streets.

Gov. Newsom said the case is about protecting democracy. Trump’s team argued the troops are needed to keep federal workers and property safe. A court hearing is set for Tuesday.
