After the Senate passed President Donald Trump’s sweeping “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”, the House faces a difficult task to meet its self-imposed July 4 deadline.

The bill passed 51–50 after an all-night voting session, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaker vote. Now, the bill will head back to the House for approval of the changes made by the Senate.

What’s in the legislation?
It cements current tax brackets and boosts the standard deduction. It also extends Trump’s 2017 individual tax cuts.

Additionally, the bill eliminates taxes on tips, introduces a national school choice tax credit, and raises the US debt ceiling by $5 trillion.

According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the bill is expected to add $3.3 trillion to the national debt.

Medicaid and SNAP overhaul
The bill enforces Medicaid work requirements—80 hours per month—for many adults, starting December 2026. It adds copays for services and delays hospital tax cuts to 2028. Over the next decade, the legislation would cut $1 trillion, resulting in the loss of health care coverage for more than 10 million people.

The bill will also reduce the federal budget for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by 20%.

Conservatives in the House Freedom Caucus call the bill fiscally reckless. Meanwhile, most Americans are not in support of the legislation.
