President Donald Trump raised alarms about public safety in Washington, DC, promising to unveil a plan on August 11 targeting crime, cleanliness, and homelessness in the capital.

Analysts say violent crime in DC fell to its lowest level in over 30 years in 2024, with homicides down 32%, robberies down 39%, and armed carjackings down 53%, according to police data.

The downward trend continues in 2025, with total violent crime down 26% through August 8.

However, Trump posted on Truth Social that the homeless in the city “have to move out, IMMEDIATELY.” He threatened to federalize the city if conditions don’t improve.

He has already ordered increased federal law enforcement presence in DC, including US Park Police and officers from a dozen agencies.
