Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Monday banned Chinese citizens from buying land in the state.
He signed three bills to counteract the “concerted effort” by the Chinese Communist Party to acquire farmland in Florida.
According to the legislation,
-
Chinese nationals are restricted from buying land unless they are also American citizens or permanent residents.
-
Chinese citizens with non-tourist visas, would be limited to buying fewer than two acres, at least five miles away from any military institutions.
-
Russian, Iranian, Cuban, Syrian, North Korean and Venezuelan citizens are not allowed to buy within 10 miles of military bases, but can buy elsewhere in Florida.
DeSantis referenced an incident where a Chinese drug developer tried to buy 1,400 acres in Levy County for $5.5 million in late 2022.
