Walmart is testing new technology in its stores that lets employees unlock security cases using their phones, aiming to reduce theft while keeping sales smooth.
The system is being tested in several hundred Walmart locations and could eventually be made available to Walmart+ loyalty members.
The initiative comes as retailers struggle with shrinkage or loss of inventory due to theft, damage, or other factors.
Shrinkage is a growing problem for retailers as it causes financial losses. High-theft items like cold medicine, cosmetics and detergent are often stolen and resold online.
Traditional methods, like keeping items locked, have helped protect inventory but have led to frustration for shoppers and added work for employees.
It also stops customers from impulse buying, which is not great news for sales.
To improve security, stores have added more cameras, guards and staff at self-checkout stations. Some retailers, like Target, have also changed their rules to stop theft more efficiently, allowing workers to act on thefts over $50.
