The president-elect recently expressed interest in keeping TikTok around, partly due to his campaign gaining popularity on it

President-elect Donald Trump filed a brief on Friday urging the Supreme Court to pause the fast-approaching law banning TikTok in the country. He said he wants time to negotiate a deal to save the app.

The move came after Trump recently expressed interest in keeping the social media app around after seeing that his campaign had gained popularity. TikTok has around 170 million US users, with 59% of adults under 30 using it, according to Pew Research Center.

Trump’s move puts him at odds with key Republicans like Mitch McConnell and Marco Rubio, who view TikTok as a national security threat.

President Joe Biden signed a bill in April mandating the social media app’s Chinese parent, ByteDance, divest its ownership or face a nationwide ban beginning January 19, 2025.

SCOTUS recently agreed to review TikTok’s First Amendment challenge and will hear the case on January 10.
