Oklahoma State’s football team is trying something new to generate money based on its players’ name, image, and likeness (NIL). The Cowboys helmets will have QR codes, which fans can scan to donate to the college’s NIL fund.
It is believed to be the first NIL fund in college football history. It is part of a bigger change where college athletes can make money.
The Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy believes it is a “revolutionary step” for the team. The idea behind the fund is to help players in non-star positions, like offensive linemen, benefit financially.
Gundy feels it will help players focus on the game rather than bagging NIL deals. He also hopes it will attract more players to join in the future.
While not visible from the stands, fans watching on TV can capture these QR codes, potentially boosting the team’s NIL earnings. Donations start at $100 and can go up to $5,000.
