The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved an Apple software update that will turn AirPods Pro 2 into over-the-counter hearing aids for people with mild to moderate hearing loss.
The update, set to roll out in the coming weeks, enhances sound by amplifying voices and reducing background noise. Users can take a hearing test via the Apple Health app.
The tech giant’s new feature follows the FDA’s 2022 approval of OTC hearing aids, aimed at improving accessibility for the 38 million Americans with hearing loss. However, they won’t replace traditional hearing aids for severe loss.
Apple currently holds a 19.2% global market share in headphones.
