Apple is conducting an internal survey as it looks to develop its own smart glasses to compete with Meta|Jorge Quinteros|CC BY-NC-ND 2.0

Apple, already in the tech wearables industry with its smartwatch and AirPods, is exploring venturing into the smart glasses market with an internal study code-named Atlas, according to Bloomberg.

The iPhone maker is studying smart glasses available in the market and gathering employee feedback on features for an alternative to its Vision Pro headset. This means it could soon compete with Meta’s $299 Ray-Ban smart glasses, which have found some success, even without complete augmented reality (AR) features.

Apple’s new wearable tech, the high-end Vision Pro headset at $3,499, is seen as bulky and expensive, limiting mainstream appeal.

Apple’s goal could be to design lightweight, affordable smart glasses that may come with Siri.

Meanwhile, Meta and Snap are exploring AR glasses, but they won’t be ready for consumers for a few years.
