Google recently sued the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) for placing the tech giant’s payment division, which handles the discontinued Google Pay app, under federal supervision.
CFPB oversees whether companies adhere to consumer financial protection laws. Its decision stems from nearly 300 consumer complaints alleging fraud, erroneous transfers, scams, and poor customer support on the digital payments app.
A company spokesperson labeled the order as government overreach, emphasizing there is no risk to consumers since the US version of the app was shut down in June.
The move marks another regulatory clash for the tech giant, which faces a potential breakup of its Chrome browser after a federal judge ruled in August that the company illegally maintained a web search monopoly.
