Facebook and Instagram owner Meta announced plans to build a 31,000-mile-long subsea cable to support its connectivity across five continents and countries, including the US, India, South Africa, and Brazil.

The infrastructure venture, named Project Waterworth, extends Meta’s footprint beyond social media and AI tech. According to the company, it would be the world’s longest cable using a 24 fiber-pair system that transfers data at speed.

Meta notes that over 95% of the global internet traffic passes through subsea cables. The tech giant has partnered to develop over 20 subsea cables in the past decade.

The move marks Big Tech’s growing spending on cable infrastructure. Last year, Google announced plans to build the first subsea cable connecting Africa and Australia and a $1 billion investment to boost connectivity to Japan.
