Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold can run three apps at the same time, one on each screen panel|Samsung
Samsung launched its first trifold smartphone, the Galaxy Z TriFold, showing how far it has pushed foldable phone technology.
The device uses two hinges so it can open into a large 10-inch screen, giving users a tablet-style experience. When folded, it feels like a regular phone.
Samsung will release it in South Korea on December 12 for about $2,450 and plans to bring it to the US and other global markets later.
Rivals prepare, but Samsung leads in apps
Samsung announced the phone in Seoul, ahead of Apple’s expected entry into foldables next year. Huawei already sells similar devices in China, but Samsung still holds an advantage because its phones support a wider range of Android apps.
The TriFold lets users run three apps simultaneously, one on each screen panel. Samsung also updated its DeX software, allowing the phone to act like a small computer without connecting to a monitor.
To address durability concerns, Samsung improved the hinges, the aluminum frame, and the display.
