Southern Florida areas, including Miami and Fort Lauderdale, were inundated with “life threatening” flooding on Wednesday, per the National Weather Service, leaving roads, vehicles and mobile homes submerged and many residents stranded.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in five counties.
The torrential downpour is expected to continue through Friday, per the National Weather Service. Forecasts predict up to 15 inches in some areas.
The flash floods have resulted in hundreds of flight cancellations and delays in Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports and the shutdown of a section of the I-95 highway.
Residents are advised to avoid driving through high water and follow safety precautions, including preparing emergency kits and evacuation plans.
