Flash floods in the Texas Hill Country killed at least 24 people and left more than 20 girls from Camp Mystic missing on Friday.
A powerful overnight storm dumped nearly 12 inches of rain, causing the Guadalupe River to rise 22 feet in just two hours. The fast-moving waters destroyed homes, uprooted trees, and swept away vehicles.
Authorities deployed drones, and hundreds were rescued. Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp, was heavily damaged.
Kerr County officials said they received no emergency alerts and admitted the area lacked a warning system. Known as “flash flood alley,” the region’s soil causes rainwater to rush downhill, making it vulnerable to deadly floods.
