A brutal winter storm is sweeping across the US, bringing temperatures as low as 50 degrees below normal and threatening to break 270+ record lows across 27 states.

By Friday, around 75% of the American population will face below-freezing conditions as the cold Arctic air spreads across the central US.

The storm is hitting hard in Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia, where deadly weekend floods have left at least 15 people dead. These areas will receive 3–6 inches of snow, further complicating rescue and recovery efforts.

Meanwhile, over 60 million people are under cold alerts or in states of emergency in the Plains, Midwest, Great Lakes, and Northeast regions, including Arkansas, North Carolina, and Virginia.
