In a dramatic showdown, Hollywood is taking a stand against Silicon Valley over California’s AI safety bill, SB 1047, known as the Safe and Secure Innovation for Frontier Artificial Intelligence Models Act.
Over 125 celebrities, including Ava DuVernay and J.J. Abrams, signed a letter urging Governor Gavin Newsom to sign the bill. It aims to regulate AI development, mandating safety protocols for large models costing over $100 million.
It also seeks to prevent misuse, such as using AI for weapons or cyberattacks. Key provisions include liability for developers, emergency stop mechanisms and annual audits.
However, the bill would require major AI developers to implement safety measures for their models, setting a powerful precedent.
Diverging interest
Supporters of SB 1047, including the SAG-AFTRA union, highlight its importance in protecting public safety. Meanwhile, critics of the AI industry argue it could hinder innovation.
Newsom has until September 30 to decide.
The bill’s outcome could shape California’s leadership in AI regulation. However, if passed, it could also face legal challenges.
