New internal guidelines direct Amazon recruiters to crackdown on job applicants using AI tools during interviews|Phil Murphy|CC BY-NC 2.0

Amazon is cracking down on job applicants using AI tools during interviews, warning it could lead to disqualification, reports Business Insider.

New internal guidelines instruct Amazon recruiters to enforce the rule, arguing that AI tools give applicants an “unfair advantage” and hinder authentic skill evaluation.

While Amazon invests in AI startups like Anthropic and has the technology as an integral part of its Alexa voice assistant and Rufus shopping assistant, its reluctance towards job seekers using AI during the hiring process reflects broader concerns in the tech industry.

AI-powered coding assistants and “teleprompter” apps allow candidates to receive real-time help, making it easier to answer tough technical questions. Amazon employees observe that this trend is widely prevalent among software development engineers (SDEs) and other technical candidates.

By relying on AI, job seekers may misrepresent their abilities, leading to potential mismatches between their qualifications and job expectations.

However, not all companies see AI as a hiring threat. Some tech firms are embracing the tech’s role in the workplace by adjusting their interview process—allowing open-book-style technical tests while supplementing them with deeper assessment questions.
