Google is partnering with Kairos Power to build seven small nuclear reactors, aiming to generate 500 megawatts of power by around 2035.

The tech giant plans to buy power from the nuclear energy company for its AI data centers, helping meet its goal of 24/7 carbon-free energy.

The deal marks the first commercial project for small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) in the US, which could reduce costs and speed up construction compared to traditional, large nuclear plants.

The Kairos reactors, using molten fluoride salt instead of water as a coolant, will be built at a site yet to be determined.

The project aims to cut costs through mass production. The agreement reflects how much companies are willing to pay for first-of-a-kind reactors.
