The FAA has established new rules for operating electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles (eVTOLs), also known as air taxis.

eVTOLs take off like helicopters and fly like planes, and cause less pollution.

The 880-page FAA document, published Tuesday, mentions new rules on pilot training and safety guidelines, such as the maximum height eVTOLs can fly.

It is a big deal
These flying EVs are the newest aircraft category in 80 years. The last one was the helicopter in the 1940s.

Several companies, including Joby Aviation and Archer, plan to use these aircraft for air taxis, cargo delivery and rescue missions. These firms are backed by auto and aviation giants, including Toyota, Delta and United Airlines.

However, it will take time for them to receive the necessary certifications to start commercial services.

Overall, the new FAA regulations aim to balance safety while encouraging the growth of this innovative air travel technology.
