President Joe Biden declared an emergency in California on Monday due to the persisting winter storms, flooding and mudslides that have caused at least 12 fatalities.
More than 130,000 homes and businesses were without power as of Monday. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasters have warned of a “relentless parade of cyclones” in the coming days that risk flooding central and northern California.
Biden’s declaration will allow the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to release funds and assist with relief efforts.
In California, 34 million people were under a flood watch as of yesterday.
