Unrelenting torrential rain flooded several parts of the US South and Midwest over the weekend, killing at least 18 people, including two children and a teenager.

In Kentucky, the Licking River reached a record 50 feet, causing five deaths and destroying 1,000 homes.

Several cities, including those in Missouri and Tennessee, ordered evacuations. Utilities such as gas and electricity were shut down in areas between Texas and Ohio. Rescue crews in inflatable boats are searching for stranded residents.

As of Sunday, over 90 tornadoes were reported in at least 10 states, from Kansas to Ohio. The National Weather Service (NWS) warned of a “major flood stage” level that could damage roads, bridges, and other infrastructure.

Warm temperatures, strong winds and abundant moisture from the Gulf have fueled the severe weather. Conditions are expected to subside by Monday.
