Protestors want the Biden admin to stop federal approval of oil and gas drilling permits and new fossil fuel projects|@nychange|X
Ahead of the U.N. Climate Ambition Summit, more than 75,000 climate change protesters, activists and students gathered in New York and around the U.S. Sunday and urged President Joe Biden to move away from fossil fuels.
Protesters gathered to demand the Biden administration
- Stop federal approval of oil and gas drilling permits and new fossil fuel projects.
- Phase out oil and gas drilling on public lands.
- Declare climate change as a national emergency.
- Stop U.S. oil and gas exports.
- Transition to renewable energy.
Federal approval of the Willow oil drilling project earlier this year, which allows oil giant ConocoPhillips to produce around 180,000 barrels per day for the next 30 years in Alaska’s North Slope, was also protested against.
A White House spokesperson defended the project, pointing to the government’s recent decision to overturn Trump-era policies that allowed oil drilling in the ecologically vulnerable region.
The protest comes as the Earth sees increased wildfires and stronger hurricanes (due to climate change), and experienced its hottest summer on record.
