A game-changing voyage that could reduce carbon emissions in the shipping industry set sail earlier this week.

The ship in the spotlight is the wind-powered vessel Pyxis Ocean. Its WindWing innovation by BAR Technologies harnesses sea wind and uses it for sailing.

The shipping industry accounts for nearly 3% of human-caused global emissions, producing more than one billion tons of emissions each year.

WindWings is estimated to cut up to 30% of a ship’s fuel consumption. Pyxis Ocean’s performance will be monitored to see how energy efficient it is.

It is a joint project by the cargo shipping giant Cargill, European Union and some other marine industries.

The vessel started its journey in China and is currently heading towards Brazil.

If successful in reducing fuel consumption, the wind-powered ship will help achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, pledged by several countries.

But
Sails installation is expensive. According to experts, it will take up to a decade to save the amount of fuel to surpass the cost of installing them.
