A federal judge has ordered five government agencies to release billions of dollars in funding for climate and infrastructure projects that the Trump administration paused.

District Judge Mary McElroy issued a temporary injunction, applying nationwide, to release funds while the lawsuit proceeds.

Environmental nonprofits filed the lawsuit after the Trump administration froze funds approved under the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

The lawsuit targets the agriculture, energy, interior, housing, and EPA sectors, alleging the freeze harmed projects like protecting giant sequoias and improving air quality.

Judge McElroy called the freeze “arbitrary and capricious” and affirmed that agencies cannot block Congress-approved funding indefinitely.
