Animal experts say tarantulas can travel up to 20 miles in search of a mate

Male tarantulas are on the move across the Southwestern US in search of females this mating season. It has led to tens of thousands of arachnids emerging from their burrows in states like California, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, and Texas.

Animal experts say the eight-legged creatures can travel up to 20 miles in search of a mate. Many risk their lives in travel, and most die after mating.

Despite their intimidating size, with some as large as dinner plates, tarantula venom is not dangerous to humans. Their body hair can cause irritation or allergic reactions. Experts recommend leaving them alone, as they play an important ecological role.

It’s not just tarantulas making headlines: tick-related ER visits are up 20–30% in the Northeast, and the 2025 cicada bloom unleashed billions across 12 states. The NBC reported that the spotted lanternfly also continues to invade the Northeastern parts.
