Champagne sales are facing a second consecutive year of declines as inflation-weary consumers and global conflicts cut spending on the pricey sparkling booze.

The wine shipments from its birthplace, France, dropped nearly 10% to 271 million bottles in 2024, notes the Comite Champagne trade association of over 16,000 winegrowers and 320 Champagne houses.

France’s domestic sales of the drink also saw a 7% dip. Even French luxury powerhouse LVMH, the world’s largest Champagne producer, reported a 14% sales decline in the first half of last year.

In 2021, wine growers in France saw their smallest harvest since 1957 due to the extreme weather events, including high heat and early frosting, the country has been facing for a few years.

Wine producers note that gloomy politics and macroeconomic situations around the world leave key Champagne markets like France and the US in no mood for celebrations.
