In a daring cheese heist now dubbed the “Grate Cheese Robbery,” thieves stole over 24 tons of premium cheddar, worth nearly $390,000, from Neal’s Yard Dairy in London.
The cheese company revealed that a scammer posing as a French distributor tricked them into delivering 950 wheels of the award-winning cheeses, including the prized Hafod, Westcombe and Pitchfork cheddars—all of which are artisanal and aged for 12 to 18 months.
The scammer contacted Neal’s via email and negotiated for several months, displaying a deep understanding of the cheese business.
The UK police are investigating, but no arrests have been made yet.
Meanwhile, the cheese maker and celebrity Chef Jamie Oliver put out a plea to the public to report if they come across any sale of the stolen cheddar cheeses.
