McDonald’s believes the issue may be tied to slivered onions from a single supplier

McDonald’s has temporarily removed its Quarter Pounders from restaurants in Colorado, Kansas, Utah and Wyoming after an E. Coli outbreak linked to the burger sickened 29 people, with one death reported.

The CDC had received reports of 49 cases across 10 states between September 27 and October 11. Most of the cases have been reported in Colorado and Nebraska.

McDonald’s believes the issue may be tied to slivered onions from a single supplier. It has paused the distribution of the onions and instructed restaurants to remove them.

The company has also removed Quarter Pounders from menus in some franchises in Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.

Other menu items like cheeseburgers and Big Macs are still available.

E. Coli can cause symptoms like stomach cramps and diarrhea and, in severe cases, kidney failure.
