A UK company has launched what it calls the first lab-grown meat for dog foods. Its limited-release dog treats are made from plant-based ingredients and cultivated meat from cell samples of a single chicken egg.
The company behind the Chicken Bites dog treat, Meatly, claims the lab-grown chicken meat tastes like traditional chicken breasts and offers the same level of nutrition. It sees the launch as an eco-friendly, cost-effective path forward for sustainable pet food.
While currently available at just one location in Britain, Meatly plans to expand within 3–5 years.
Scaling production in cultivated meat remains a challenge in the UK and Europe as it is still banned for human consumption. The US first approved the sale of “cultured” or “cultivated chicken” from Upside Foods and Good Meat in 2023.
