Luigi Mangione, the suspected shooter of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, pleaded not guilty to state murder and terror charges on Monday in New York.
The 26-year-old faces 11 counts, including murder, weapon and forgery charges, which could carry the death penalty and life in prison without parole.
Mangione’s lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, criticized NY officials, accusing them of politicizing the case and tainting the jury pool. Mayor Eric Adams defended his actions, calling the killing a “cold-blooded assassination” that evoked terror.
The Ivy League graduate is held in federal jail, and his state trial is expected to proceed first. He was arrested in Pennsylvania after a five-day manhunt.
