It will be a great start to a new year for at least one lottery player, possibly in California, who bought the winning ticket to the $1.22 billion Mega Millions jackpot on Friday.
While the winner’s identity remains unknown, the winning numbers were 3, 7, 37, 49, 55, and the gold Mega Ball 6. The ticket was sold at a Circle K in Cottonwood, California, a small town of 6,000 people.
The jackpot’s full amount is paid only through a 29-year annuity. But most past jackpot winners chose a lump-sum cash payout, which would be $549.7 million in this case.
The odds of a player winning the jackpot was 1 in over 302 million, making it one of the biggest wins since Mega Millions’ record $1.6 billion jackpot in August 2023.
