This Monday, Inauguration Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day will overlap for the third time in history, as President-elect Donald Trump’s second inauguration falls on the holiday dedicated to the civil rights leader.
Previous occurrences were during Bill Clinton’s and Barack Obama’s second inaugurations in 1997 and 2013.
MLK Day, established as a federal holiday in 1983, always takes place on the third Monday in January, while Inauguration Day has been fixed on January 20 since 1937.
The events won’t overlap again until 2053 due to their unique calendar requirements.
Critics see irony in the overlap, as Trump has faced backlash for comparing himself to King.
