President Donald Trump signed the Laken Riley Act into law yesterday, requiring the federal detention of undocumented immigrants accused of criminal activity.
It’s the first piece of legislation he’s signed in his second term, which the House approved in a 263–156 vote; 26 Democrats joined the Republicans in favor of the bill.
A version of the act was passed in the Senate earlier this week.
Laken Riley was the name of a nursing school student who was murdered last year in Georgia by a Venezuelan citizen who entered the US illegally. He had been arrested twice before he committed the murder.
