France, the top wine exporter to America, has vowed to fight back

President Donald Trump said in a social media post that he would impose a 200% tariff on European alcoholic beverages if the EU doesn’t remove the 50% duty it placed on US spirits.

The dispute follows Trump’s 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum, prompting the EU to retaliate with tariffs on $28 billion in US goods, including bourbon and motorbikes.

France, the top wine exporter to America, has vowed to fight back. It shipped 27 million bottles of champagne to the US in 2023, according to Comite Champagne, and last year exported $2.5 billion worth of wines.

The US spirits industry warned of severe consequences, with the Distilled Spirits Council calling for de-escalation.

If implemented, Trump’s tariffs could halt imports of French wine, worsening the trade conflict with no resolution in sight.
