The United Nations Security Council voted to pass the cease-fire proposal backed by President Joe Biden to end the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. The plan seeks a pause in fighting, the release of hostages and increased humanitarian aid.
In a 14 to 0 vote on Monday, with Russia abstaining, US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the council sent a strong message to Hamas.
The plan proposes:
-
A 6-week cease-fire, during which Hamas will release hostages and Israel will free Palestinian prisoners.
-
Next, Hamas and Israel will negotiate a permanent end to the war.
-
The final phase involves rebuilding Gaza.
Israel has accepted the plan.
A senior Hamas official has also said it accepts the UN cease-fire resolution, which Secretary of State Antony Blinken says is a “hopeful sign.”
