A targeted US airstrike on central Baghdad on Thursday killed Abu Taqwa, the deputy commander of Iran-linked Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba militia, along with an associate. No civilian casualties were reported.

The Iraqi government, angered by the strike in a central area, claimed that agreements between Baghdad and Washington had been violated.

The Pentagon called it a necessary action against a planner of attacks on American personnel.

The strike, amid heightened regional tensions from the Israel-Hamas conflict, aggravates Iraq’s push for US-led coalition forces to exit the country.
