On the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine, the US twice took the side of Russia while voting at the United Nations.

The vote resolution highlights the Trump administration’s change of stance on the war.

First, the US refused to back the resolution condemning Russian aggression and supporting Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Then, it drafted and voted for a resolution at the UN Security Council that called for an end to the war but did not call out Russia.

The European nations and Ukraine had enough votes at the 193-member General Assembly to have their resolution passed. However, the US passed its version at the 15-member Security Council, which has decision-making power.

Five European countries abstained, including the U.K. and France.

The vote coincided with President Donald Trump’s discussions about an economic deal with Russia.

Additionally, in a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump indicated that the US is close to a mineral rights agreement with Ukraine.
