US and Ukrainian officials will meet next week in Saudi Arabia to discuss a possible deal to end the Russia-Ukraine war, reports The New York Times.
The upcoming meeting follows tense exchanges where President Donald Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for not showing enough gratitude and then paused US military aid and intelligence to pressure Kyiv into ceasefire negotiations.
Zelensky later expressed regret and showed interest in committing to a partial truce with Russia.
The US may receive a share of Ukraine’s rare mineral resources as a part of the agreement.
Ukraine plans to demand Russian commitments, including stopping attacks on energy infrastructure, halting missile strikes and ceasing military operations in the Black Sea.
Russia has not agreed to a truce but is open to discussions. Trump believes both sides must negotiate.
Meanwhile, Trump may revoke temporary legal status for 240,000 Ukrainians, potentially fast-tracking deportations. His administration also plans to strip parole protections from 1.8 million migrants who entered the US under Biden-era programs.
