Mark Carney will be Canada’s new Prime Minister. The banker-turned-politician won the Liberal Party leadership election with nearly 86% of the vote.
He replaces Justin Trudeau, who resigned in January following declining approval ratings. However, recent polls show that Liberal support is improving, with numbers rising from 20% to 34%, while Conservatives stand at 37%.
Carney will serve until the next scheduled election in October.
Who is he?
Carney, 59, led the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 and the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. He played a key role in guiding Canada through the 2008 financial crisis and later became the UN’s special envoy for climate action. He also advised Trudeau on the COVID-19 economic response.
A Harvard and Oxford graduate, Carney has also worked at Goldman Sachs offices in London, Tokyo, New York and Toronto.
His arrival comes amid a tough economic climate
Carney faces rising US-Canada tensions following tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump and his insistence on making Canada the 51st state.
Criticizing the same during his victory speech, Carney said, “Canada never, ever, will be part of America in any way, shape or form.”
