Germany’s election results delivered a historic win for the nationalist AfD led by Bjorn Hocke. It is the first far-right party victory in a German state since World War II and the party’s first state-level victory since its founding 11 years ago.
Projections show that AfD secured 33.4% of the vote in Thuringia and was a close second in Saxony.
The victory is a major blow to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s center-left SPD party, which received under 8% in both states.
Despite the success, the AfD is unlikely to govern due to coalition challenges.
