Iran’s ultraconservative President Ebrahim Raisi, his foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and several other officials died in a helicopter crash on Sunday, state-run Press TV reported.

Raisi, an ally of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and known for his anti-Western views, was the key member of the ‘Death Commission’ responsible for the execution of thousands of political prisoners in 1988.

Khamenei announced that vice-president Mohammad Mokhber would serve as the sitting president until elections take place.
