Japan is charging $12.40 per person to climb Mount Fuji

Climbing Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji now comes with new rules to tackle overcrowding. To ensure safety and to preserve its UNESCO World Heritage status, the country started charging climbers $12.40 per person yesterday.

There will also be a daily limit of 4,000 climbers to manage foot traffic effectively.

The governor of the Yamanashi Prefecture emphasized the importance of these measures, highlighting concerns about littering and safety on the mountain.

The new rules include the deployment of additional guides who will educate climbers on trail etiquette and safety protocol.

In May, the authorities erected a 66-foot-long and 8-foot-tall black mesh barrier near a convenience store that has the tallest peak in Japan in the background to deter tourists from overcrowding the area popularized on Instagram.
