Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau criticized the oversupply generated by Chinese companies

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada will impose a 100% tariff on China-made electric vehicles (EVs) starting October 1, aligning with the US and European Union in addressing the unfair subsidies Beijing provides its automakers.

President Joe Biden announced a similar tariff on Chinese electric cars and other imports in May.

Currently, Chinese EVs face a 6.1% tariff in Canada. Following a 30-day public consultation, the government will also introduce a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum from China.

Trudeau criticized the oversupply generated by Chinese companies, citing an unfair marketplace advantage. He also stated that tariffs on batteries and other critical materials are under consideration.

China responded with strong dissatisfaction, accusing Canada of trade protectionism and of breaching the World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.
