In a historic moment for Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, the former mayor of Mexico City and a climate scientist, won the election and will become the country’s first female president.

Known as “ice lady” by her rivals, Sheinbaum will officially start her six-year term on October 1.

She vows to maintain friendly relations with the US and tackle migration issues.

Current Mexican president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is an ally and Sheinbaum’s mentor. She emphasized her commitment to continuing the social policies of the outgoing Lopez Obrador.

Despite challenges, including violence in cartel-dominated regions, voters turned out in large numbers. Sheinbaum secured approximately 58-60% of the votes, per a post by the National Electoral Institute.

Sheinbaum is also the first woman to win a general election in the US, Canada and Mexico.
