A catastrophic landslide buried over 2,000 people alive in Papua New Guinea’s Enga region last Friday, according to figures verified by an official of the country’s National Disaster Center (NDC).

The landslide, which struck Yambali village, also buried a 200-meter stretch of the main highway under six to eight meters of debris, leaving a trail of destruction. The reason for the mass wasting is still unknown.

So far, only six bodies have been recovered.

Acting director of the NDC, Lusete Laso Mana, told the United Nations that the disaster will majorly impact the country’s economy.
