US envoy Jared Kushner is scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today
US envoy Jared Kushner met Hamas political leader Khalil al-Hayya in Egypt on Sunday as Washington pushed to restart stalled efforts toward a Gaza ceasefire.
Officials from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey joined the talks as mediators. Discussions focused on a US-backed plan that calls for Hamas to give up its weapons while Israeli forces gradually withdraw from Gaza.
Kushner, who is also President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, is scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today.
Hamas said it supports the roadmap but wants Israel to stop attacks and withdraw to an agreed boundary before implementation begins.
Israel, however, has insisted that Hamas must fully disarm before its forces leave Gaza.
Netanyahu has also rejected the 15-point proposal, putting the negotiations under further pressure.
Separately, the US-Iran memorandum signed in June expired Monday as efforts to end the conflict remained deadlocked.
Iran says the main issue is Washington’s failure to meet its commitments. Tehran also continues to link the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to US actions, including its naval blockade and sanctions.
