Four months after the Colorado Springs massacre, Governor Jared Polis signed four gun-control bills Friday.
They are:
-
Raising the buying age for any gun from 18 to 21
-
Establishing a three-day waiting period between the purchase and receipt of a gun
-
Expand the state's "red flag" law to allow psychologists, teachers and others to ask a judge to temporarily seize a person's firearms if they pose a threat
-
Repeal current limits to allow civil lawsuits—including from the attorney general—seeking damages against firearm makers and sellers, by the victims. Roll back some legal protections for the firearm industry, exposing them to lawsuits from the victims of gun violence
The new laws are aimed at limiting suicides, and youth violence, preventing mass shootings, and opening avenues for gun violence victims to sue the long-protected firearm industry.
Gun rights groups are approaching the courts to reverse two of the measures: buying age and the waiting period.
