A growing number of Americans are opting for a type of cosmetic surgery that permanently changes their eye color. The procedure, known as keratopigmentation or corneal tattooing, involves using lasers to create tunnels in the cornea, which are then filled with pigments.

The procedure takes about 30 minutes and costs $12,000. It is not covered under insurance.

Some people opt for the procedure to boost confidence or enhance their appearance, while others choose it to look more like family members.

However, experts warn of risks, including infections, light sensitivity, and potential vision loss.

A study found that 30% of patients reported temporary light sensitivity, and some experienced fading or discoloration of the pigments.

Though the FDA has not approved the pigments used in the procedure, keratopigmentation continues to gain popularity among those seeking a dramatic eye color transformation.

Dr. Alexander Movshovich, one of the few doctors performing the surgery in the US, has treated hundreds of patients since offering it in 2019.

Many eye specialists advise safer alternatives like prescription contact lenses.
