Risk factors include being overweight, lacking physical activity, and a family history of diabetes

About 1 in 3 US teens ages 12 to 17 had prediabetes in 2023, affecting an estimated 8.4 million adolescents, according to new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

Prediabetes means elevated blood sugar levels, raising the risk of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

Dr. Christopher Holliday from the CDC called it a “wake-up call” and warned that Type 2 diabetes poses a “significant threat” to youth.

Risk factors include being overweight, lacking physical activity, and having a family history of diabetes.

The CDC urges teens to stay active and eat healthy to prevent or delay the disease.
