Researchers have discovered a worrying connection between xylitol, a popular low-calorie sweetener and increased risk of heart attacks, stroke, and even death, per new findings published in the European Heart Journal.

Xylitol is found in various reduced-sugar foods.

Senior study author Dr. Stanley Hazen suggests xylitol’s impact on blood platelets can potentially lead to dangerous blood clots.

The study involved testing healthy volunteers with xylitol-laden drinks, resulting in a significant spike in blood levels.

Additionally, erythritol, another common sweetener, showed risks in a previous study.
